Active participation in bipolar support groups provides patients with the right motivation, positive reinforcements and greater chances of living a normal life.

Bipolar disorder typically requires long-term treatment since it is a chronic and relapsing type of mental illness. Patients work with an experienced psychiatrist to effectively navigate through the twists and turns of the disease. Medications are usually prescribed to prevent the onset of manic or depressive episodes and manage its symptoms. Medication alone does not guarantee full recovery. To ensure effective treatment, medications are usually combined with other forms of treatment such as undergoing therapy, making lifestyle changes and joining bipolar support groups. Bipolar support groups are basically a community of bipolar patients as well as their families, which aims to spread awareness and offer guidance among people affected by bipolar disease.

What is Bipolar Disorder
Treatment Options

Prescription medicines such as anti-anxiety, sedatives, antidepressant, antipsychotics, calcium channel blockers and other mood stabilizing drugs are used to help patients control extreme mood swings. Psychological therapies, which include Gestalt therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, talk therapy and family and marriage counseling, are recommended to help increase the patient's compliance to his medications and prevent complications like developing anxiety problems and other behavioral disorders.

Depending on the severity of the case, psychiatric hospitalization may be recommended for patients who require 24-hour care. Outpatient programs are also becoming common. This way, patients agree to participate in treatment programs during the day but return to their own homes at night. Along with the usual treatment routine, participation to social groups like bipolar support groups is often recommended.

What are Bipolar Support Groups?

Bipolar disorder treatments pose certain challenges not only among patients but also to their families. Being able to talk with people who are undergoing the same experiences gives them the ideal support system where they can share tips and local resources for the best treatment available in their area. Bipolar support groups are basically comprised with people who are living with bipolar disorder. The main focus of social groups like bipolar support groups is to share awareness and provide of positive reinforcements for individuals who are coping with the disease.

Impact of Bipolar Support Groups to Treatment

Bipolar support groups give out help and encouragement to people who are living with bipolar disorder. They support bipolar disorder patients as well as their families by educating them and guiding them through treatment.

Participation to social support groups like bipolar support groups allows bipolar sufferers to become survivors. Surrounding them with people who are also suffering similar bipolar experiences helps establish a strong supportive environment that will continuously and consistently motivate them to comply with the requirements of their treatment. This way, support groups give bipolar patients a greater chance of living a normal life.

Finding a Bipolar Support Group

Contacts for bipolar support groups in the USA are available at the local offices of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). Check out for the listings of local NAMI chapters as well as its local chapter websites. Also, you may check the support group listings at the local offices of US Department of Health and Social Services as well as the National Mental Health Association.

In Canada, valuable resources include the Mood Disorders Society of Canada, the Canadian Mental Health Association. For other countries, you may check some international support organization such as the Manic Depression Fellowship, the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, the Dutch Association for Manic-Depressives and the German Society for Bipolar Disorder. Check the Worldwide Support Organization List for more bipolar support group contacts and information.

The Use of ECT – Electroshock

Electroshock (ECT) was first introduced in the 30s, but due the bad publicity of ECT therapy, and the negative portrayals in movie, electroshock therapy frightened so many people after that and has come to be used as a last resort for bipolar treatment. Today, however, ECT has been refined and is becoming very popular.

Treating patients with ECT treatment is quite useful when:

1. Bipolar medication is not working.

2. There is an urgent needed to intervene, e.g. suicide risk or severe cases of psychosis.

3. The use of bipolar medication may be too risky, e.g. women who are pregnant.

With the use of modern ECT techniques, the risk of memory problems has been reduced significantly. The only drawback with this type of treatment is, it is quite expensive and often requires more treatments.

Anti Convulsant Drugs

•	Valproate (Depakote): is and anti-convulsant medicine and used as a mood-stabilizer.

•	Depakote: first approved in 1995 by the Food and Drug Aadministration (FDA) for treatment of mania. Doctors use this medicine on stubborn mania symptoms.

•	Seroquel: brand name for Quetiapine was approved by the FDA to treat both bipolar mania and bipolar depression. The only problem with this medication is the side effects, which many people find difficult to tolerate.

•	Prozac and Lexapro: increasingly unpopular because it is both dangerous, ineffective and can trigger bipolar mania symptoms.

Using diet – as Bipolar Treatment

With the problem of fast foods and what have you in our food; diet and nutrition has been increasingly recognized as an effective way of treating bipolar depressive symptoms. You can discover for yourself the power of using diet for stabilizing moods and weights. Some proven natural supplements in managing bipolar depression symptoms are:

1. Fish oil: A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that – Omega-3 fatty acid which is found in fish oil, is good for treating bipolar depression.

2. Folic acid: For building white blood cells – These acids can be found in leafy vegetables, certain fruits, liver, liver products, baker's yeast and some breakfast cereals.

3. Inositol: member of the vitamin B complex and high concentration of inositol can be found in grains, beans, nuts and fruits.

Transcranial (TMS) magnetic stimulation.

Magnetic stimulation (TMS) is when strong magnetic pulses are induced with weak electric currents on specific parts of the human brain tissue. Not like the ECT method, patients always remain awake and alert because there is no use of anesthetic. The benefits of this type of treatment is, the magnetic pulses are not strong enough to cause seizures, and secondly memories are not lost.

Bipolar treatments for bipolar

When on a bipolar treatment always consult your doctor for anything, from changing your bipolar medication to even changing your doctor. There are lots of bipolar treatment available but what may work for some may not work for others. The word we always emphasize is be PATIENT and be HONEST with your medication.

The Two Divisions of Depression

During the middle of this century depression was divided into two:

• Endogenous: depression is a problem coming from within the body and probably linked to a genetic origin. It may also be caused by the body itself but nobody knows its source. Bipolar depression falls under this category.

• Neurotic or reactive: depression is caused from outside, like the death of a loved one, losing somebody special and the loss of the only source of income. In 70s and the 80s, the focus changed from “the cause”, to the “effects” of depression on victims.

In Agreement

We may never know what causes depression or bipolar depression, but most would agree that:

• It is a syndrome that reflects severe sad, irritable mood which can be classed as abnormal sadness or grief. These feelings of sadness of depression are both intense and takes a long time when compared to the normal ups and downs.

•The characteristics are the presence of negative thoughts, moods, and behaviors and not to mention the physical symptoms like, crying spells, aches in the body, very low energy in both work and sex. Other problems may include eating, weight and sleeping problems.

• Depression increases the risks for coronary artery disease, HIV, asthma, and some other medical diseases. It can also increase the mortality rate of victims with this depressive conditions.

• The huge financial and human costs of depression in the United States alone are huge and this includes - treatment costs, other indirect costs, like lost in productivity and absenteeism of workers.

Bipolar Depression

The unique trait of this illness is, it's not the outside that is causing the depression, but the brain producing its lows with the feelings of worry, sad, angry, guilt, isolation and hopelessness. This disorder is caused by the brain’s neurotransmitters which can cause sleeping and eating problems and a shift in moods.

Problems with Not Treating

Like most serious diseases, bipolar depression can create problems with those living together, members of the family, close friends, and your boss at work. With family members of those with bipolar depression it can drain out the energy level of family members.

Bipolar Treatment Depression

Bipolar depression can be inherited within families and if you find that a member of your family or a friend are showing symptoms of bipolar depression like sleeping too much, sad, feelings of helpless, worthless, hopeless with decreased energy and concentration, please seek medical advice near you so they can be given bipolar treatment early.

The word depression is the hindering of a person’s moods, marked by the different levels of their feelings of loneliness, sadness, disappointment, hopelessness, guilt and self-doubt. These depressive feelings can be quite severe and may continue for a long time. Daily functions may be hard, but most patients are able to cope with their depression. For those experiencing severe depression – hopelessness can become so intense that ending one’s life can occupy the person’s thoughts. These mood disorders or affective disorders occur in two flavors, namely “unipolar” and bipolar depression.

Unipolar Depression

Bipolar depression must be differentiated from unipolar depression. The most permanent feeling is the sense of anxiety, despair, being hopeless and useless in about everything. The mental disorder is not caused by the abuse of illicit drugs or medication. This unipolar depression only manifests depression and its symptoms are:

· Extreme lack of energy

· Disturbance in sleeping patterns

· Waking up early

· Difficulty in going to sleep

· Waking up tired even after long hours of sleep.

Severe Bipolar Depression

Bipolar is a serious disorder in the brain chemistry, causing severe mood, energy and functioning which shifts to high, low and back again. In very severe cases of bipolar depression, pain can be so great that patients are even scared they may not get out alive because the thoughts of suicide are constantly on their mind. For these people when in these mood stages, there is never a good day, remember the good times and sometimes in their pain they are praying to die. While depressed victims want to die most would not have a good reason to end their life.

Feelings of Hopelessness

While the feeling of hopelessness is part of depression, in severe cases, patients sometimes just don’t see much hope in their depression getting any better. With this lack of hope is the fear of not being able to come out of bipolar depression, which can lead ultimately to the idea that life is not worth living and ultimately end it all.

Bipolar Treatment

While many can lay claim to the effectiveness of bipolar treatment drugs, there are others who can also say that the use of bipolar medication not only gives side effects it makes bipolar depression worse. With no effect of medication and very low energy level, severe cases of bipolar depression can only remember or are preoccupied with their emotional pain.

Ray of Hope

While the future may look bleak for most of these severe cases of bipolar depressed victims, there is a ray of hope and it is their family. A family that is loving and supportive can do wonders to these patients. Bipolar treatments can only do so much, but where it fails it is the immediate families that can help the person continue on with life despite the odds.

Bipolar Mania

To really understand hypomania one must first know bipolar mania, because it is from the mania symptoms that we can gauge hippomania. Mania is part of bipolar disorder and its social effect can be very disabling especially when this mania symptoms are severe. There is usually a great feeling of happiness when you're manic, but it is a fact that some people also get angry and agitated when they are a going through hippomanic.

The symptoms of Hypomania

• Those effected tend to expect too much of their capabilities.
• They can feel very high self-esteem or “having an exaggerated belief in one's importance.”
• There alcohol consumption can increase.
• They can have lots of plans but are not able to see risks involved in their undertakings.
• Making so many plans.
• Tend to involve themselves in enjoyable activities
• Uncharacterized sexual flirting increases.
• Want to do too many things all at once.
• Lack of interest in sleep.
• Usually very sensitive.
• Wanting to take many responsibilities.
• Goal-directed activity increases.

Common Mistakes

The hypomania account listed are not really negative, but what makes this symptoms scary is that those with the disorder can make bad to very bad choices when they are with increased energy. The second most common error is because they feel good with hippomania, they stop taking bipolar treatment medications.

What you can do Hypomania sufferers.

• Make sure they have a god nights rest. If they are not able to sleep, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. Not having enough sleep can lead to bipolar depression.
• Avoid jumping to any important decision if you are hippomanic, wait until you are okay to make those important decisions.
• If possible try and keep your thoughts directed and focused.
• Make sure to keep your money in some safe and reliable hands who can make tough decisions for you. This will greatly help you in the future. Many have the headache to pay their huge credits after coming out of hypomania or mania episodes.
• Try and be involved in relaxing and calming social activities, but not an environment that can stimulate the symptoms.
• Try and avoid social gatherings which involve disco, dance and the drinks at the bar. This is a very dangerous environment because it can trigger hypomania.
• Always be open about your feelings and consult with your friends or families so they can understand them to.
• Talk to your local doctor before it becomes uncontrollable.
• Try not to consume too much alcohol, sugar or caffeine and always eat well balanced meal.

Finally

It is important for friends and families to recognize the signs of this mood behavior, because most of the time people with hippomania tend to deny that anything is wrong with them. This disorder if not treated well by bipolar treatment can become severe bipolar mania or turn into bipolar depression.

What Really is Bipolar Mania

As the name would imply, bipolar mania revolves around the manic (up) phase of bipolar disorder. To those with a cursory understanding of the condition, the assumption here is that mania is “good” since it is the opposite of depression. However, bipolar mania comes with many risks since it can dramatically influence behavior in a very negative way. For example, a person in manic phase may become impulsive and go on a massive shopping spree. The end result of this is the person now is in debt for thousands of dollars and would never have made the purchases if not suffering from a bipolar mania phase.

The Different Stages of Bipolar Mania

Not all forms of bipolar mania are extreme. The mild “up” swings a person may feel are known as hypomania. Again, this is the mild form of mania where the person is awake, alive, and upbeat. However, it is not a permanent condition and the person can swing into a severe depressive of manic stage in a relatively short period of time.

All Out Mania

Full bipolar mania can contain varying degrees of risk. It can lead to impulsive and erratic behavior such as excessive talking, increased sex drive, restlessness, and an inflated opinion of the self. Such behavior can seriously undermine social interactions. However, these symptoms can be dealt with. But, there are other more serious symptoms that can prove very dangerous.

Complete bipolar mania can be a very scary state of mind to be in. When the mind reaches a thoroughly manic stage, the mind may become confused and disoriented thoughts race almost incoherently through the person’s mind. High anxiety and paranoia can set in. Worst of all, it is during the manic stage that an individual may entertain suicidal thoughts. This is why it is very important that the condition of bipolar mania is taken serious. It possesses far too many risks to be overlooked.

Bipolar Treatment Options

Bipolar treatment needs to be done by a professional in order to reverse its negative aspects. The most common means of bipolar treatment are counseling, therapy, and out patient prescription care. In general, the results are often very positive and the serious symptoms of bipolar mania can be curtailed.

Of course, education on the subject can significantly increase one’s ability to overcome the pangs of bipolar disorder. This also helps remove the stigma associated with the disorder. Thought there may not be a full cure for bipolar medically, bipolar treatment options such as therapy help in controlling a lot of the affects that bipolar mania causes.

Drug Therapy Treatment

The most common way bipolar disorder is treated is through the use of prescription psychiatric drugs. The most common prescribed drugs include antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, mood stabilizers, and ant-psychotic drugs. These prescriptions will allow the problems of depression and mania to be kept in check. As a result, the various symptoms that spawn out of bipolar disorder can be kept in check. And, of course, this means the problems caused by these symptoms will be minimized.

It is important to note that a psychiatrist will need to rely on patient feedback in order to ascertain whether or not the combination's of drugs that have been prescribed are working properly. Patients need to log the positives and negatives they have noticed after taking the prescriptions. Upon reporting such information to the psychiatrist, a decision can be made as to whether or not to increase or decrease a dosage; change or substitute a prescription; or discontinue the use of prescriptions completely.

Psychotherapy and Counseling Treatment

Counseling and psychotherapy involves discussing your condition with a qualified mental health care professional. However, there are significant differences between the two. For some, one approach is better than the other. Then, there are those that will utilize both methods. But, in order to select a particular approach, one needs to know the difference between the two.

Counseling

Counseling mainly deals with advice. Problems associated with a condition are worked out through talking about them. The counselor may then give advice on how to deal with these problems with the hope that they will become less of a problem.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is much more involved and complex. This process deals with actual behavioral modification with the intention of removing the condition. This is a radical departure from counseling which generally seeks to mainly deal with the condition. Once again, one approach is not better than the other. They are simple different approaches that all have their own unique value.

A Word on Treatment

One thing that needs to be clearly understood is that there are no “quick fixes” for dealing with bipolar disorder. Any and all forms of treatment will take time to achieve long lasting successful results. Bipolar disorder is a complex condition. As such, one needs to be patient and approach the successes of treatment in realistic and incremental manner.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder:

Next to paranoid schizophrenia, manic depression was considered to be caused by a chemical imbalance, characterized by many of the same symptoms, except hearing voices and hallucinating were not symptoms of manic depression. Typically, bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings, impulsiveness, irritability, and depression symptoms of fatigue, loss of energy, feeling hopeless, sad and empty.

In the manic phase, the patient may feel euphoric, energetic, talk fast, easily excitable and overly happy. In the depressive stage, they may be so lethargic that they won’t get out of bed for days, be easily agitated, and severely depressed. These extreme mood swings can happen within days of each other or have periods in between. Milder cases may seem like a person is just a happy person to be around and later they may lie in bed with no motivation for days.

Bipolar Treatment Options:

Bipolar medication and bipolar treatment go hand in hand, as many times medication alone does not cure the problem. The important thing is to not wait before getting help because symptoms can worsen. Full blown episodes can lead a person to become suicidal, as often there are feelings of guilt and worthlessness connected to bipolar disorder.

Depending on the extremity of the bipolar episodes, bipolar medication and bipolar treatment usually go together, and treatment may involve learning how to keep stress and cortisol levels down through techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises, in addition to medication.

Serotonin Levels and Recognizing the Problem:

Bipolar medications that often affect the serotonin need to be monitored by a psychologist, to get the right dosage and help get through the phases of the disorder. While bipolar disorder can be hereditary, studies have shown that serotonin shortages, which control mood, may cause bipolar disorder and bipolar medications, like Celexa, for example, increase serotonin levels to balance them to normal levels.

Recognizing the problem and educating yourself on the symptoms are the first steps in treating bipolar disorder, as symptoms tend to worsen with time, and can occur in episodes. Often, first episodes happen in teenage years, but they can also happen in adults. Sometimes, they just aren’t as easily recognized in earlier years, or blamed on something like hormonal changes. It can also be hard to recognize in alcoholics and drug users that might display similar symptoms.

If you have extreme mood swings and periods of severe depression, it is highly likely you could have bipolar disorder, and you should educate yourself on the types of bipolar medication and bipolar treatment options available.

In this sense, it is important to get an overview about what is happening with the person during these times. Bipolar disease is characterized by two extremely contrasting mood condition that affect daily functioning. The first extreme is called mania and the person is usually observed to be in a very happy and energetic mood. On the other end is the depressive episode where the person feels very sad and lonely.

The Severity of Bipolar

While some of these signs and symptoms can appear with other individuals, the continuing pattern and the severity can tell the difference. With these guides, anybody who may experience these events or who may have witnessed the same with a family member or friend can then be prompted to seek for a professional’s help and diagnosis.

Symptoms of the Manic Episode

Imagine someone with tremendous amounts of energy that he or she seems to need little sleep and still have the enthusiasm to talk all day and night. A person with bipolar disease can be a joy to be with at this stage. He can have that infectious euphoric mood and be more lively than usual. He can also get restless and get involved in various activities. Nothing can seem to bring this person down. On the other hand, the same person can be very irritable and can get easily distracted by seemingly harmless things he sees and hears in the environment. His thoughts are likewise irrational and can actually feel more self-confident than he typically is. As such, he will try to do dangerous stuff such as careless driving and get involved in drugs and other addicting substances. Despite all these, the person will still deny that something wrong is already happening.

Symptoms of Depression for Bipolar Disease

Meanwhile, the bipolar symptoms for depression are just the opposite of mania. The person has low energy and his thoughts and speech likewise seem to be slowed down. Focus and concentration will be hard to find and low self-esteem takes control. Those activities that he used to be very excited about do not offer the same appeal. If he used to be very interested in sex and would even dare to be indiscriminate, he will find himself apathetic to all these activities. Consequently, he feels very miserable, anxious, and helpless. The person will also tend to sleep too much or suffer from insomnia. The same thing happens to his eating habits and he will either tend to eat too much or too little. As such, noticeable weight gain or weight loss takes place. Also gone is the optimism and enthusiasm for life. In fact at this stage, the person can feel so useless he will think about ending his misery by committing suicide.

Support for Bipolar Disease

Whichever mood the person with bipolar disease is experiencing is evidently harmful to self and other people. This individual definitely needs all the help and support he can get to successfully deal with this lifetime challenge.

Bipolar Symptoms and Bipolar Treatment

Treatment of bipolar disorder will normally begin with a physician recommending bipolar depression medication. Since the lows can be potentially hazardous to the health of someone with the symptoms of bipolar, it is important to treat it first. In recent years, the use of anti seizure medication has become popular as well. Your physician will talk to you about your condition and personal issues and take it all into consideration to come up with the best bipolar treatment options for you.

A huge mistake that many people on bipolar symptoms medication make is to stop taking their medicine all of the sudden. There are all kinds of reasons people do this, some feel sick or strange while taking the medication and others simply do not want to take it anymore. No matter what the reason is, it is imperative that you do not do this. It will cause more problems than it will solve besides you should always consult a medical professional before ending any course of treatment.

Professional Monitoring

Monitoring by a medical professional is standard for the first few days. Your physician will want to carefully watch and see how your body reacts to the medication. In the beginning, you may have an adjustment period while you get used to the various feelings or side effects of the medicine. Medications may make you feel better initially, however the side effects can take several weeks to adjust to. In addition, you may find that one type of medicine is having little or no effect at all, at which time you will need to ask your doctor to prescribe another medication.

Stick to your Plans

The single most important thing you must do is stick to the treatment for your bipolar disorder symptoms. This is not the type of disorder that you want to play around with. The results of ignoring the symptoms of bipolar and treatment can be very dangerous. Remember if you have bipolar symptoms, there are many effective treatments available to you. You do not have to suffer with bipolar disorder as long as you are willing to work with medical professionals to address all concerns and keep the disorder under control.
