Taking Bipolar Medication- Doing it Right can Save your Life
There is still a lively debate going on as to the merits of bipolar medication and even of the question of whether these medications should be taken in the first place. If you happen to suffer from bipolar disorder yourself, you obviously have a lot of interest in the topic of whether or not a bipolar medication or a depression medication is the way to go in your case.
Your doctor will first need to diagnose you and try to establish the cause of your bipolar disorder. Following this, your physician will most likely write you a prescription for some type of bipolar medication. In many cases, bipolar patients do experience some relief from their symptoms, finding that the bipolar medication evens out the highs and lows characteristic of the disorder.
Of course, there is the question of side effects which may be associated with these medications to be considered. Any bipolar medication or depression medication may have some side effects and in some cases, these side effects may outweigh the benefits of the medication.
Before beginning any bipolar medication, weigh the pros and cons of the medication with your physician. Following are several things to be considered when beginning in a course of bipolar medication.
The Selection
First, you’ll need to learn more about the different kinds of bipolar medication which can be used for treating bipolar disorder. Your doctor will work with you to try to decide which of these options will be the best fit for you. Your general level of health, your age and any medications you are already taking, as well as any health problems you may already have will be considered.
Give it Time
Bipolar medication needs some time to work. You may start experiencing side effects before the medication really begins to help, but just be patient with the medication – these will gradually go away and within six weeks, the bipolar medication will begin to do its job.
Don’t Stop Taking it
It is very important to never suddenly stop taking bipolar medication. This is a mistake commonly made by bipolar patients and the consequences of doing this can be extremely serious. There are various withdrawal symptoms which may result from the sudden cessation of depression medication, including medications for bipolar disorder. Your body becomes used to the medication and stopping all at once may lead to permanent damage. Speak with your physician if you want to stop taking a given bipolar medication – he or she can advise you on how to safely stop taking the drug to avoid harming yourself.
