Bipolar Treatment
Many people in the world know that manic depression is another term for bipolar disorder. This is an illness of the mind that is caused by a number of different things. These things can include neurological, biological, emotional, and environmental factors. The most common symptoms of this disorder include large shifts in mood. This can often include cycles of depression, mania, and normal behavior at times.
The important thing to realize is that there are tons of different ways that Bipolar disorder can be treated. One of the most common disorders for this type of illness is therapy combined with medication. Many people do not realize that medication will not work for everyone. The type of patient that would not be a candidate for medical treatment is a person that has been known for drug abuse. The other reason why a patient would not use medication is because they may not have a serious enough illness. Many other people do not like using medication unless it is a last option.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a method that has been developed by professionals for use when medical treatment is not an option in patients. This type of therapy works extremely well for patients that can't take medication. This method of therapy helps to recognize what triggers symptoms that they might have during their episodes. This type of treatment works really well because over seventy percent of patients do not experience episodes within their first four years of this type of treatment.
Recognizing Manic Episodes and Discover Techniques
It is important for everyone to realize that there are two main goals associated with using CBT as treatment for bipolar disorders. Recognizing manic episodes before they become uncontrollable is the first goal of CBT therapy. The next goal involved with CBT therapy is to discover techniques, reactions, thoughts, and behaviors that will bring upon depression in a patient. It can often be difficult for the average person to recognize these things. It takes a professional therapist to figure this out through various techniques. This type of therapy involves the cooperation of the patient who needs to do exercises and read to help themselves in the long run.
Treatment
Developing a contract of treatment with the patient is the first step in treating a bipolar disorder with CBT treatment. The purpose of this contract is to find a plan that the patient will agree to follow. This means that the patient will have to take all of the medication and do all of the homework prescribed by the therapist. It is important to realize that CBT depends on the patients desire to help cope with their disorder. If the patient is willing to work hard to help keep their disorder under control then their should be no problems.
Monitor, Grade and Take Notes
After the first step of this process, the second step of treating this disorder with CBT therapy is to monitor, grade, and take notes about the moods that the patient is having. Each therapist has worksheets that are designed to allow the patient to write down how they are feeling. This sheet lets the patient record several different things such as how long they have slept, their level of anxiety, and how irritable they may be throughout a day. It is important to realize that if a patient has type two polar disorder then they may need to record how they are feeling several times throughout a day.
It is vital for the therapist to understand the pattern of moods that the patient is having in order to successfully move onto the next step of treatment. During this step it is very important for the patient to read worksheets and do all of the homework the therapist needs them to do. This will help the patient to understand their emotions. If the patient understands all of these things completely then they will be able to think differently to control their emotions. This will help them to control their mood swings.
Episode Triggers
Triggers are something that trigger an episode in a bipolar patient. It is vital for a therapist to be able to recognize these triggers so that these triggers can be avoided. Triggers can be a range of different things including emotions, situations, times of year, thoughts, events or even some environments that can set off a depressive or manic episode. The key to treating a bipolar patient is learning to identify these triggers.
Therapy Success
CBT Therapy has been highly successful for patients that are bipolar. For many people that are bipolar this is a great alternative to medication. If you are a person that might benefit from going through CBT therapy then you should contact a doctor or therapist to discuss further options of treatment.
